Emma Stone’s New Movie Will Make You Want to Dress Like a ’70s Tennis Star

Not a sports fan? Neither am I.

But you don’t have to be a regular at the U.S. Open to appreciate Emma Stone in Battle of the Sexes, the 28-year-old’s latest film. In it, she portrays tennis champion Billie Jean King as she prepares to take on Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) for their dramatic and undeniably unforgettable 1973 exhibition match that pitted the male and female players against one another.

The film’s thriller promises an exciting mix of positively inspiring feminist energy alongside a standout cast that also includes Sarah Silverman and Alan Cumming. However, we were particularly taken aback by the fashion. In the exclusive behind-the-scenes video above, director Jonathan Dayton and the leaders behind the soon-to-be hit film explain how they achieved the look of the ‘70s.

Battle of the Sexes is designed to look like it’s from 1973. We even changed the Fox logo, so that you’re like in the theater in the ’70s,” Dayton says. Costume designer Mary Zophres explains her take on the fashion and why there are so many Lacoste-like tennis-ready dresses you’ll want to immediately wear before fall settles in.

“The fashion in the late ’60s and early ’70s, the idea of self-expression through your clothes really started to come into play. So our movie is telling a story of the Women’s Movement and also the history of fashion,” Zophres explains as other brains behind the project explain why there’s so much color, too.

Stone’s favorite part of her transformation into King? The hair, for sure.
